That brightness test is the most reliable replacement cue: hold the filter up to a window or lamp, and when the pleats are no longer translucent, replace rather than rinse. Do not scrub the pleats with a brush, because scrubbing compresses the filter media and reduces the effective surface area. Allow a full 24 hours of air drying after each rinse – a damp filter reinstalled into the chassis develops mould at the base of the pleats within days and produces a musty odour on the next cleaning run. Two filters in this set let you rotate one in while the other dries, eliminating the temptation to re-install a still-damp cartridge.
