Replacement parts and service intervals

Washable pre-motor filter

The pre-motor filter is the primary dust capture stage and the first consumable to saturate during active use. It sits directly above the dust container and intercepts the full particle load before air reaches the motor. Wash it under cold running water once a month until the water runs clear, then leave it flat on a dry surface for at least 24 hours before reinstalling. AEG explicitly prohibits reinserting a damp filter: a wet filter medium restricts airflow more severely than a dry, loaded filter does, and repeated moisture exposure near the motor housing accelerates degradation of both the filter medium and the electrical contacts. Replace the pre-motor filter every three months under typical household use. If it remains visibly mid-grey after a full wash rather than returning to a near-white state, replace it earlier. Washable post-motor filter

The post-motor filter handles exhaust air after it passes through the motor chamber. Its role is to capture fine particles the motor sheds during operation and any fines that escaped the pre-motor stage, so that air exiting the exhaust vent meets AEG’s filtration standard. A post-motor filter that is overdue for replacement typically produces a faintly dusty or musty exhaust smell that returns shortly after the housing is cleaned. Wash it monthly on the same schedule as the pre-motor filter, using the same cold-water rinse and 24-hour drying period. Replace it every three months, at the same time as the pre-motor filter. Because both filters are included in the AEF167 consumable set, replacing them together ensures the full two-stage filtration architecture is refreshed at the correct interval.

Main brush roll

The motorised floor nozzle brush roll is the primary mechanical pickup surface for hair, crumbs, and embedded carpet debris. Press the BrushRollClean button weekly in a pet-free home and at the end of every session on the AEG QX9-1-ANIMAEG QX9-1-ANIM, AEG QX9-1-ANISAEG QX9-1-ANIS, AEG QX9-1-ALRGAEG QX9-1-ALRG, and AEG QX9-1-ALRSAEG QX9-1-ALRS Animal variants where pet hair is the norm. Open the nozzle cover monthly to inspect the roller end caps and bearing slots directly; compressed hair in the bearing slots does not respond to the BrushRollClean cutting sequence and must be cleared manually with small scissors. Mini motorised turbo brush

The Animal and Ultimate variants ship with a mini motorised turbo brush intended for upholstery, pet bedding, stairs, and fabric seats. This accessory has its own compact roller that accumulates hair at a faster rate than the main floor nozzle because it operates in close contact with soft surfaces. There is no automated cleaning feature on the turbo brush, so manual removal of hair and fibres with small scissors is the standard method after each upholstery session. A turbo brush that chatters or vibrates during use despite a visually clear roller may have debris lodged inside the turbine air intake, which warrants a closer inspection of the airway behind the roller cavity. A worn or damaged turbo brush roller that cannot be cleared by manual cleaning is ready for replacement. Dust container

Empty the dust container after every cleaning session or as soon as it reaches the MAX fill line mid-session. Operating above the MAX line forces partially separated debris back through the cyclone entry point, depositing fines directly onto the pre-motor filter and compressing what would otherwise be a one-month filter loading cycle into a much shorter window. Remove the container and wash it in warm soapy water once a month, then allow it to dry completely before reassembly. Inspect the cyclone shroud inside the container each time it is washed: a clean shroud confirms the filter stack is performing correctly. A consistently grimy shroud after washing is a reliable indicator that the pre-motor filter is overdue for replacement and is no longer capturing the full particle load at the cyclone stage.

Battery

The 21.6 V lithium-ion battery is not a consumable on the same cadence as a filter, but it has a finite cycle life of approximately 500 to 800 full charge cycles before noticeable capacity loss begins. Storing the vacuum on its charging dock between sessions keeps the pack in its optimal charge window and avoids the deep-discharge pattern that degrades lithium-ion cells fastest. A battery that now delivers less than half its original runtime despite verified clean filters and a cleared brush roll has reached the end of its practical service life. Common problems and their maintenance causes

Suction noticeably weaker than usual

The most frequent cause of reduced suction on any QX9-1 variant is a saturated pre-motor filter. Remove the filter and hold it up to a strong light source: a consistent mid-grey mat that does not brighten after washing is a clear replacement indicator. If the filter appears relatively clean, check the dust container for compacted fines at the cyclone base and empty it fully. The third check is the floor nozzle inlet throat, which can become partially blocked by a hard object or a dense ball of compressed debris that behaves identically to a clogged filter from the handle end. On the AEG QX9-1-ANIMAEG QX9-1-ANIM and AEG QX9-1-ALRGAEG QX9-1-ALRG, also check whether the turbo brush inlet is partially obstructed when that accessory was last used.

Runtime noticeably shorter than rated

A reduction in cleaning time of 15 to 25 per cent is almost always a maintenance symptom on the QX9-1 rather than a sign of battery failure. A loaded pre-motor filter raises the motor’s current draw to maintain apparent suction, and that extra current drains the battery pack faster per session. On the AEG QX9-1-ULTAEG QX9-1-ULT, a run that ends noticeably short of its rated 55 minutes is more likely to be a filter issue than a battery issue. The correct diagnostic sequence is to wash both filters, observe the full 24-hour drying period, reinstall, and then retest before drawing any conclusions about the battery.

Exhaust producing a musty or dusty smell

A persistent exhaust odour points directly to the post-motor filter. Fine particles that escape the cyclone and the pre-motor stage accumulate on the post-motor medium and generate an odour after roughly six to eight weeks of daily use in an average household. Wash the post-motor filter under cold water, dry it for the full 24 hours, and reinstall. If the smell returns within a week of the freshly washed filter being put back, the filter medium has degraded past the point where washing restores effectiveness and it should be replaced. Odour that recurs quickly after a wash is a reliable sign that the material is breaking down rather than simply being dirty.

Brush roll stalling or stopping mid-session

A roller that stalls mid-session is almost always responding to a dense hair wrap overload at the bearing slots. Press the BrushRollClean button first: if the button sequence frees the roller, continue the session and plan a manual inspection at the end. If the button sequence does not free the roller, open the nozzle cover and manually clear the bearing slots at each end of the roller with small scissors. These slots are the most common accumulation point because the BrushRollClean cutter reaches the midspan of the roller but cannot access the compressed mass inside the bearing housing recesses. On the Animal variants AEG QX9-1-ANISAEG QX9-1-ANIS and AEG QX9-1-ALRSAEG QX9-1-ALRS, clearing the bearing slots after every second session prevents the stall pattern from becoming a recurring mid-session interruption.

LED floor lights flickering or dimming

The row of LEDs across the front of the floor nozzle runs from the main power line via the swivel joint connector between the nozzle and the wand. Flickering lights are almost always caused by grit or dust accumulation at the connector contact points rather than by an LED fault inside the nozzle. Detach the nozzle from the stick wand, wipe the contact pins on both mating surfaces with a dry lint-free cloth, and reattach. If the flicker persists after cleaning the contacts, the swivel joint connector may have sustained physical damage at the pin interface, and AEG support is the appropriate next step rather than any further self-service attempt.

Water appearing inside the body after filter washing

Water visible inside the body or at the exhaust vent after a filter wash almost always indicates that one or both filters were reinstalled before they had fully dried. Remove both filters and leave them on a flat, dry, well-ventilated surface for a minimum of 24 hours before fitting them again. A filter that has been reinstalled damp on more than one occasion may degrade ahead of its nominal three-month replacement interval, because repeated moisture exposure breaks down the filter medium faster than airborne dust loading does. Always check both the pre-motor and post-motor filter cavities for any residual moisture before fitting a freshly washed pair, since liquid left in the cavity can wick back into the filter medium within the first few minutes of operation.

Trigger feels delayed or hesitates before the motor engages

A brief hesitation between pulling the trigger and the motor starting is most commonly caused by contact oxidation at the battery-to-handle interface. Remove the battery pack, inspect the contact pins on both the pack and the handle socket, and wipe all surfaces with a dry lint-free cloth. AEG does not specify any solvent or contact cleaner for the QX9 platform, so a dry cloth is the correct tool. A hesitation that persists after the contacts have been cleaned may indicate the trigger switch itself has worn internally, which is a service repair beyond routine user maintenance. Taking the vacuum to an authorised AEG service centre is the recommended path at that point rather than attempting any further disassembly.

What consistent maintenance protects over time

The QX9-1 filter stack, brush roll, dust container, and battery function as a connected system rather than a collection of independent components. A saturated pre-motor filter restricts airflow, which forces the motor to draw more current, which heats the battery pack and shortens the useful output of each charge cycle. A dust container filled above the MAX line bypasses the cyclone separation stage and pushes unfiltered fines onto the pre-motor filter, compressing what would otherwise be a one-month loading cycle into a much shorter period. A wrapped brush roll stalls the nozzle motor periodically, generating brief spikes of high current draw that accumulate over hundreds of sessions as measurable battery cycle degradation. When each component is serviced on its correct schedule, no single one compensates for a neglected neighbour and the full system performs to its designed service life.

The vacuum itself is unchanged: the same motor, the same filter stack, the same nozzle, and the same 40-minute standard battery. Ultimate edition

The AEG QX9-1-ULTAEG QX9-1-ULT is the one variant where the hardware itself meaningfully changes: the extended-capacity battery pack raises the maximum runtime ceiling to 55 minutes, compared with 40 minutes on every other QX9-1 model. The ULT also ships with the full Animal accessory bundle, including the mini motorised turbo brush.
